Non-profit foundation

Ethereum Foundation

Supports Ethereum through research, funding and coordination. Its March 2026 mandate places user self-sovereignty at the centre and explicitly positions the Foundation as one steward among many.

Contribution

Funds work that helps keep Ethereum censorship resistant, open source, private and secure, without claiming authority over the network.

Context

The Foundation is influential, but Ethereum governance is broader than its board or staff.

Ethereum infrastructure company

Consensys

Builds Ethereum software and institutional infrastructure, including Teku and Web3Signer. Its current focus includes open infrastructure for digital markets.

Contribution

Consensys and Joseph Lubin are jointly listed for 30,000 ETH by the DeFi United recovery initiative.

Context

Commercial interests and ecosystem contributions can coexist. Neither creates authority over Ethereum.

Privacy research & development

Privacy Stewards of Ethereum

An R&D lab building tools, standards and applied research to make privacy practical across Ethereum. PSE works on programmable cryptography, identity, voting and more.

Contribution

Creates reusable open-source privacy infrastructure and coordinates its adoption across the ecosystem.

Context

Privacy is a capability to build and verify, not a blanket guarantee about every Ethereum application.

Primary sources

Mission and current projects ↗

Naming & identity infrastructure

Ethereum Name Service

Turns blockchain addresses and records into readable names. Its naming infrastructure supports identities across wallets, applications and chains.

Contribution

Makes user-owned identity and decentralised websites easier to discover and use. ENSv2 is in its activation-proposal stage as of this review.

Context

ENS has its own governance and security assumptions. Its DAO does not govern Ethereum itself.

Core development funding

Protocol Guild

A collective funding mechanism for Ethereum layer-one R&D maintainers. An eligibility framework, member registry and on-chain contracts distribute vested funding.

Contribution

Helps sustain the people maintaining the base protocol, making long-term technical contribution more financially viable.

Context

Donations do not buy protocol influence. Stewardship decisions continue in wider forums such as All Core Devs and public research discussions.

Restaking & verifiable services

EigenCloud / EigenLayer

EigenLayer supplies the staking trust layer within EigenCloud, alongside products for verifiable computation and data availability.

Contribution

Extends crypto-economic security to additional services and applications beyond Ethereum’s base consensus.

Context

Restaking introduces additional slashing and dependency risks. Securing an external service is distinct from securing Ethereum consensus.

Current platform and products ↗

Independent non-profit R&D lab

Ethlabs

A non-profit research and development lab for Ethereum and ETH. Its current team includes Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnabé Monnot, Caspar Schwarz-Schilling and other researchers and builders.

Contribution

Adds another independent research organisation to Ethereum’s wider network of contributors.

Context

Its current team is broader than the five-person description on the previous version of this site. No unverified founding date is used here.

On-chain lending protocol

Aave

A non-custodial liquidity protocol connecting suppliers and borrowers. Aave service providers led the DeFi United response following the April rsETH incident.

Contribution

The recovery initiative lists Aave DAO for 25,000 ETH. The DAO, its service providers and Aave Labs are distinct actors.

Context

Lending and recovery programmes carry technical, governance and financial risks. A contribution is not proof that a recovery has completed.

Liquid staking protocol

Lido

Liquid staking infrastructure for ETH, with multiple operator modules including Community Staking and distributed validator technology.

Contribution

Supports validator operations and staking access. DeFi United lists a 2,500 ETH contribution under Lido.

Context

Large staking providers also create concentration questions. A large stake does not automatically imply greater decentralisation.

Ethereum scaling & on-chain finance

Mantle

An on-chain financial ecosystem connecting market participants and tokenised assets, alongside Ethereum scaling and staking infrastructure.

Contribution

DeFi United lists Mantle for 30,000 ETH. That aggregate listing alone does not establish whether every amount is a donation, loan or other arrangement.

Context

Scaling systems have their own governance and trust assumptions. Review those independently of contribution size.

Ethereum layer-two governance

Arbitrum DAO

Governs an Ethereum scaling ecosystem. The April rsETH recovery involved proposals concerning ETH frozen by the Arbitrum Security Council.

Contribution

DeFi United lists 30,765 ETH for Arbitrum DAO with a “Pending Vote” label in the source retrieved for this review.

Context

This is not labelled as a completed donation here. Frozen-fund releases require specific technical and governance actions.

Staking & financial applications

ether.fi

Builds staking and financial applications around digital assets. Its product suite now extends beyond the liquid-restaking description on the old page.

Contribution

Listed by DeFi United for a 5,000 ETH recovery contribution.

Context

Staking, restaking and consumer financial products have different risk models. They should not be treated as interchangeable.

Ethereum co-founder & researcher

Vitalik Buterin

Contributes protocol research, cryptography and public analysis of Ethereum’s direction. His work on alignment argues for observable properties rather than social proximity.

Contribution

Helps make open source, interoperability, security and positive-sum contribution concrete topics for public scrutiny.

Context

Vitalik is influential, but does not hold unilateral control over Ethereum. This directory is not endorsed by him.

Ethereum co-founder · Consensys founder

Joseph Lubin

Ethereum co-founder, founder of Consensys and chairman of Sharplink. His roles connect Ethereum development with institutional infrastructure and public markets.

Contribution

DeFi United jointly lists Consensys and Joseph Lubin for 30,000 ETH; the page does not split that amount between them.

Context

His institutional roles and commercial interests should be considered alongside his ecosystem contributions.

Aave Labs founder & CEO

Stani Kulechov

Founder of Aave Labs and the original ETHLend project. His work spans on-chain lending products and ecosystem coordination.

Contribution

DeFi United lists a personal contribution of 5,000 ETH from Stani Kulechov, separate from the Aave DAO amount.

Context

A founder, a development company and a token-governed DAO have different powers and obligations.

ETH treasury & validator operations

Bitmine

A publicly listed ETH treasury company operating institutional staking infrastructure through MAVAN. Its 12 October 2026 release reports approximately 6.03 million ETH.

Contribution

Provides institutional capital and validator infrastructure. The holding figure is a dated company disclosure, not a live on-chain total.

Context

Corporate accumulation is financially motivated and can increase concentration. Capital scale does not confer protocol governance authority.

Bitmine chairman · Fundstrat co-founder

Tom Lee

Chairman of Bitmine and co-founder of Fundstrat. His public work brings an institutional investment perspective to ETH and staking infrastructure.

Contribution

Acts as an advocate and capital-markets bridge through Bitmine’s treasury and validator strategy.

Context

Investment theses and price forecasts are opinions, not evidence of Ethereum’s future performance or protocol control.
