A comprehensive overview of the organizations, protocols, and individuals who safeguard, build, and advance the Ethereum network for the benefit of all.
An Ethereum Steward is not an owner, ruler, or final authority over the network. A steward is a trusted custodian who acts in the long-term interest of Ethereum and its users, protecting the network's core values without seeking control over it.
Stewardship takes many forms: developing and maintaining core protocol clients, funding public goods, providing liquidity in times of crisis, advancing privacy research, or accumulating and staking ETH to secure the network's consensus layer. What unites all stewards is a commitment to Ethereum's original promise over personal or institutional gain.
"The EF is not Ethereum's parent, ruler, or final authority. Our role is stewardship. To help Ethereum keep its original promise, and nothing more."
Ethereum Foundation Mandate, March 2026
These organizations form the bedrock of Ethereum's development. They fund research, maintain core infrastructure, and define the long-term direction of the protocol.
The original steward of the Ethereum project. The EF does not govern Ethereum but safeguards its core values through research funding, protocol development, and ecosystem grants. In March 2026, it published its formal Mandate, defining itself as "one of many stewards" and codifying the CROPS principles: Censorship Resistance, Open Source, Privacy, and Security.
Founded by Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin, Consensys is the leading Ethereum software company. It builds MetaMask (100M+ users), Infura (the backbone API layer), the Besu and Teku clients, and the Linea L2 network. In April 2026, Consensys and Joseph Lubin contributed up to 30,000 ETH to the DeFi United recovery fund, earning the designation "leading Ethereum steward" from Aave founder Stani Kulechov.
PSE (Privacy Stewards of Ethereum) is a research and development lab delivering programmable cryptography to the Ethereum ecosystem. As an EF-supported team of cryptographers, mathematicians, and engineers, PSE embeds zero-knowledge proofs, private identity systems, and on-chain voting tools into Ethereum's application layer, making privacy a first-class citizen of the network.
ENS Labs develops and maintains the Ethereum Name Service, the decentralized naming protocol that maps human-readable names to Ethereum addresses. ENS Labs is a founding member of the Linea Consortium's steward council and plays a central role in Ethereum's identity infrastructure. The ENS DAO itself uses the "Steward" title for its elected working group leaders.
These teams maintain the client software that runs Ethereum's execution and consensus layers. Without them, the network would not exist.
Protocol Guild is the leading independent funding organization for approximately 190 Ethereum core protocol contributors. It includes client implementors for Besu, Erigon, Geth, Nethermind, Prysm, Lighthouse, Teku, Nimbus, and Lodestar. The Guild uses a vesting contract to distribute donated tokens to active contributors, ensuring long-term alignment between those who build Ethereum and the ecosystem they serve.
Eigen Labs develops EigenLayer, the restaking protocol that extends Ethereum's cryptoeconomic security to other networks and services. As a founding member of the Linea Consortium's steward council, Eigen Labs plays a key role in expanding Ethereum's security model beyond the base layer. EigenLayer has become a cornerstone of the broader Ethereum security infrastructure.
Ethlabs is a newly founded (June 2026) non-profit R&D lab for Ethereum and ETH, built by five former Ethereum Foundation core researchers: Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnabé Monnot, Caspar Schwarz-Schilling, Josh Rudolf, and Julian Ma. Their mission is to make Ethereum the settlement layer of the global economy. Ethlabs sits between real-world usage and the base protocol, working with users, applications, wallets, L2s, institutions, and core developers to translate practical needs into protocol work, shared standards, and shipped products. In their own words: "We are one node in a much larger network of stewards. This is the multi-node future."
In April 2026, the KelpDAO/LayerZero exploit drained $292 million from the protocol. The response from these organizations defined a new standard for ecosystem stewardship: coordinated, self-funded, and community-driven recovery.
Aave is the largest decentralized lending protocol on Ethereum, with over $3.46 trillion in lifetime deposits. Aave Labs initiated and coordinated the DeFi United recovery effort, contributing 25,000 ETH from the Aave DAO treasury. Aave's role as the primary coordinator of the $300M+ recovery fund established it as the de facto crisis management hub for the Ethereum DeFi ecosystem.
Lido is the largest liquid staking protocol on Ethereum, with over $15.9 billion in TVL and empowering Ethereum's security since 2020. Lido was the first protocol to publicly announce support for DeFi United, pledging 2,500 stETH to the recovery fund. As the dominant staking provider, Lido's participation in ecosystem recovery efforts carries significant weight and signals broader community solidarity.
Mantle is an Ethereum Layer 2 network that made one of the largest single contributions to DeFi United, extending a 30,000 ETH loan to Aave as part of the rsETH recovery effort. Mantle's decisive action demonstrated that L2 networks have both the means and the responsibility to act as stewards of the broader Ethereum ecosystem, not just their own chains.
Arbitrum is the largest Ethereum Layer 2 by TVL. The Arbitrum DAO contributed 30,765 ETH (the frozen funds of the KelpDAO attacker) to the DeFi United recovery fund, making it one of the largest single contributors. This action demonstrated that decentralized governance can move quickly and decisively in response to ecosystem crises, setting a precedent for cross-chain stewardship.
Ether.fi is a leading liquid restaking protocol built on Ethereum and EigenLayer. As a core member of the DeFi United coalition, Ether.fi pledged 5,000 ETH to the rsETH recovery fund. Ether.fi's participation underscored the shared responsibility that restaking protocols bear for the health of the broader Ethereum staking ecosystem.
Beyond organizations, certain individuals have earned the designation through decades of contribution, financial commitment, and public advocacy for Ethereum's values.
The creator of Ethereum and its most prominent individual steward. Vitalik shapes the network's direction through research, EIPs, and philosophical guidance. In February 2026, he proposed "AI Stewards" for DAO governance, demonstrating his continued role in defining the future of decentralized coordination.
One of Ethereum's eight co-founders and the CEO of Consensys. Joseph Lubin is also Chairman of SharpLink Gaming. He was explicitly named a "leading Ethereum steward" by Stani Kulechov after personally contributing to the DeFi United recovery fund alongside Consensys.
Founder of Aave, the largest DeFi lending protocol. Stani personally contributed 5,000 ETH to the DeFi United recovery fund and orchestrated the broader coalition effort. He coined the "leading Ethereum stewards" phrase in his public acknowledgment of Consensys and Joseph Lubin's contributions, cementing the term's modern usage.
A distinct category of publicly traded companies that accumulate and stake ETH at scale, contributing to network security through validator operations. Their stewardship is financial and infrastructural rather than protocol-level.
Bitmine is the world's largest corporate ETH treasury, holding approximately 5.54 million ETH (4.59% of total supply) as of June 2026. Over 70% of holdings are actively staked via its proprietary MAVAN (Made in America Validator Network), making Bitmine one of the largest single validator operators on Ethereum. Led by Chairman Tom Lee (Fundstrat co-founder), Bitmine's stated goal is to hold 5% of all ETH, a threshold it calls the "Alchemy of 5%".
SharpLink Gaming is a NASDAQ-listed company that pivoted to an Ethereum treasury strategy in May 2025, backed by a $425 million investment led by Consensys. Joseph Lubin serves as Chairman and strategic advisor. SharpLink is a founding member of the Linea Consortium's steward council and provides investors with leveraged exposure to ETH through its treasury operations and staking yield.
Tom Lee is co-founder of Fundstrat Global Advisors and Chairman of Bitmine. One of Wall Street's most prominent crypto bulls, Lee has been a vocal Ethereum advocate, predicting ETH could reach $250,000 as corporate validators take over network control. His leadership at Bitmine has been instrumental in bringing institutional capital and staking infrastructure to the Ethereum validator set at unprecedented scale.
Note on Institutional Stewards: Unlike protocol-level or DeFi stewards, institutional treasury companies are primarily financially motivated. Their stewardship is indirect: by staking large amounts of ETH, they contribute to network security and validator decentralization. However, the concentration of significant ETH supply in single corporate entities also carries risks for decentralization that the community actively monitors.
